RIM Shot

A forgotten concept from 2009 that might’ve saved RIM? Meh. The design is sort of interesting, as concepts often are, but so what? RIM chose not to pursue it, for reasons that doubtless made sense to them at the time, so there’s little point in rehashing it now.

What I find a lot more interesting is that ChauhanStudio is talking about this at all. Clearly they’re trying to sell the narrative that their design was so innovative that it could’ve reversed the failing fortunes of RIM. The implication here is that their client wasn’t smart enough to realize the great thing they’d been handed.

My own takeaway from the piece is that ChauhanStudio is certain that RIM is never going to hire them again, so they figure there’s no harm in slagging this former client. No matter how poor the relationship has become, this is a bad way to get media exposure. The potential clients they hope to impress with this story ought to be asking themselves if they’re going to be reading the same thing about their own design decisions in a year or two.
