Augmented Reality

I’ve been writing a bit lately about the potential of mobile technology to radically change museum and site interpretation, as well as wayfinding. I recently stumbled upon a short interview with Maarten Lens-FitzGerald, co-founder of Layar, an industry leader in the relatively new field of Augmented Reality, which really piqued my interest. Lens-FitzGerald describes augmented reality as “Reality enhanced with digital information, preferably immersive”. He talks a lot about the need for having the right content and format to engage the audience, and acknowledges “it’s very early days”. I found this bit particularly interesting: “The good thing about a QR code is that it’s sort of a call to action, although I don’t have any incentive on average to point my phone at a QR code because I expect to be advertised to. One of the problems for augmented reality with a phone is, “When do I decide to point my phone at something to see if something is there?” ” Cracking that nut will be a big challenge for early adopters.
